Adelasia di Torres

History and myth

The story of Adelasia is steeped in mystery and intertwined with the story of Sardinia and medieval Europe. She was born in 1207 in Ardara and inherited the title of Giudicessa di Torres from her father.

As she married the older Ubaldo Visconti when she was 14-year-old she became Giudicessa di Gallura. she also became a widow when she reached 38-year-old and was left without children. Then, she encountered, fell in love and, rebelling against the Pope’s orders, married the young and beautiful Heinz (called Enzo) of Svevia, son of the Emperor Frederick II. For this reason she was immediately excommunicated.

Left alone by Enzo with their daughter Elena, she retired in the dazzling Goceano Castle, supported in her pain and in her functions by Enzo’s Delegate, Michele Zanche. After the papal pardon and the dissolution of marriage with Enzo, she married Michele, from whom she had a second daughter, before being left alone again. Her two daughters marry Guelfo della Gherardesca, son of Count Ugolino, and Branca Doria.

They all end up in Dante’s Inferno: Zanche among barterers and Doria among traitors, after having murdered him. Incidentally, Count Ugolino is a protagonist of one of the most famous episodes of the entire Divine Comedy.
Adelasia dies on her own at the Castle of Goceano, around 1262, and is buried in a place that remained unknown for centuries. She was adorned with its vestments, a golden crucifix, two diamonds and a ridge needle.

Her tomb was discovered centuries later (in 1860), within the church of San Gavino in Esporlatu, as it was close to the Castle and not immediately recognized. Many objects turned into dust, whereas the golden crucifix, the ridge needle and the two diamonds were taken from the body, probably sold and lost forever.

The metaphor of Adelasia

Adelasia has gone through the history of the medieval world whilst glorifying Sardinia, defending it with love and living a life full of sacrifice and loneliness.

Adelasia, like Sardinia, deserves the recognition that history never granted her.

Both the woman and the region will have benefit from it thanks to an unprecedented project taking place in the other side of the world.

America’s Cup in Auckland is the opportunity that will enable the ridge needle and the two diamonds to adorn the name of Adelasia again.
